Stop Dogs from Barking

Published by admin under Stop Barking Dog Advice

A dog will bark for many different reasons. Your dog may begin to bark when a stranger approaches or if your house is on fire. A dog will also bark if he is pain or scared. A dog may bark to intimidate you or your family members, or as a way to get your attention.

For a really fantastic dog training guide to stop dogs barking, see: How to Stop Dog from Barking

Whatever the reason, we all agree that it can be very aggravating and look for ways to stop dogs barking. Some owners of dogs that constantly bark are reported for disturbing the peace. Thankfully, it is possible to stop dogs barking without just cause.

The most effective method for stopping your dog from barking is to teach him when it is permissible for him to bark. There are several options but the best technique is the proven reward/reprimand method. This technique is successful and humane.

As an alternative to this method of training, some dog owners choose to use an electronic collar, also known as a bark collar. The dog wears the collar, which is activated when the dog barks. Your dog will be startled by the small electric shock being produced by the collar. Once dogs begin to associate pain with their barking, they will stop barking. It is my opinion that this is a cruel and inhumane method to stop dogs barking.

Some dogs do not connect the shock with their barking, which is one good reason for not using electronic collars. They develop a tolerance for the electronic shocks and continue barking. In order for the collar to be effective, the prongs must touch the skin which may not happen if a dog has a thick coat. Also, it is rare for barking to be stopped just by using an electronic collar. Including obedience training will usually give the most effective results.

There are some people who believe that electronic bark collars can be discouraging to dogs. This is the reason why some people opt for citronella collars, which use a similar principle to electronic collars. When the dog barks, a mist is produced from the Citronella collar. The majority of dogs do not like the odor. Gradually, dogs begin to connect the foul aroma with their barking and stop barking so they don’t have to suffer the smell. The success rate is approximately the same as with electronic collars.

If used correctly, electronic collars can be useful training tools, however most vets and dog trainers agree that they are no replacement for quality dog obedience training. Obedience training is effective for most dog behavior problems, not just dog barking. It also helps with other dog behavior issues.

Surgery to stop dog barking is a drastic and, in my opinion, barbaric option. A piece of tissue is removed from the larynx which prevents the dog from barking. It is not unheard of for the dog’s bark to return, voiding the surgery. Fortunately, the surgical approach to stop dogs barking is opposed by most vets.

In conclusion, I hope we have convinced you that obedience training is the best way to stop dogs barking. You should understand that if you use an electronic collar to stop your dog from barking, he will not let you know when a burglar is in the house. With the correct obedience training, your dog will protect your family but will also know when it is appropriate to bark.
