Citronella Collars: Humane and Safe Correction for Barking

Citronella Dog Bark Collars– The Humane Barking Deterrent

There are three distinct types of correction collars on the market, designed to stop your dog’s nuisance barking.

  • Citronella Spray
  • Tone Correction
  • Electrical (‘shock’ collars)

Citronella Spray Collars

A citronella collar is a humane and highly effective barking deterrent. Studies have shown that citronella collars are up to two times more effective than the electric shock models.

This type of collar contains a tiny microphone, so the spray is delivered in response to the bark. The sudden, corrective stimulus will interrupt the offensive behavior. The dog soon learns the connection between barking and getting sprayed. And the barking should cease.

This is a safe and humane way to deter excessive barking. The collar is battery-operated and adjustable; some models include a remote control, so that you can administer corrective sprays from inside your home, or away from the dog’s view.

(The remote one may really the better option if you have more than one dog, as any bark will trigger the other collar… and it may not end up correcting the true culprit!)

One type of citronella collar, called the ‘Spray Commander’, can administer correction from as far away as 100 yards. Choose either the spray (reprimand) or a pleasing tone (reward for good behavior).

Will this work for your dog?

I have seen product reviews claiming an 80% success rate; of course, every dog is different and every situation has different variables. Most pet stores offer money-back guarantees for a certain amount of time. It is not likely to be an instant solution, and the owner will need to participate for maximum result. Most dog owners report a good result within days or weeks.

Will your dog need to wear a citronella spray collar indefinitely?

No, once the dog understands the correction, and the behavior is successfully modified, you can remove the collar. The goal would be to use it occasionally, as needed, for a refresher.

what if your dog likes citronella say if he once ate a citronella candle and what if you’ve tried all different types of spray and it still doesn’t work
do you think that it will work for a dog that likes citronella

My beagle Toby has been fairly responsive to the citronella collars. I have the petsafe deluxe model which is really easy to use. The guys at dogmaster trainers couldn’t have been more helpful
